Training and testing can be delivered on site at the customers premises or on at a designated location off site.

All Close Fitting Respiratory Protective Equipment types and makes are covered, Half Masks, Filtering Face Pieces or Full Facemasks.

Where Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) is used, The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) require it must be able to provide adequate protection for individual wearers, and be “Suitable in every respect”.  RPE will not protect the wearer does not fit properly.  A major cause of leaks is poor fit or fitting.  Tight facepieces need to be correctly fitted to the wearer’s face to be effective.

As people come in all sorts of shapes and sizes it is unlikely that one particular type or size of RPE facepiece will fit everyone. Fit testing will ensure that the equipment selected is “suitable and sufficient” for the wearer.

What you need to do

The best time to carry out fit testing is at the initial RPE selection stage, when individual users can be assessed to ensure correct selection of RPE.

This will ensure that the individuals will be fit tested with the make model type and size of facepiece that they will use in the work place.

If an employee wears more than one type of tight-fitting facepiece, then each type of facepiece must be fit tested.

Remember: All wearers of close fitting RPE must be trained in its use and must be clean shaven to afford an adequate face seal.

How to do it

RPE Face Fit Testing should be conducted by a competent person. Steps must be taken to ensure that the person who carries out the Face Fit test is appropriately trained, qualified and experienced.

The British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) has introduced a scheme for fit testers, which allows you to decide whether your Fit Tester provider is competent.
